We’ve lazed around, we’ve eaten too much and now we’re ready to jump (or roll) back in and get back to our usual routines.

On returning yesterday, everybody was delighted to find that the office simply wouldn’t heat up after our time away. Fingers were icy and unable to type, breath could be seen as conversation was made and no matter how high the heater was turned up it would not. get. warm.

So despite the weather seeming to be too good to be true over Christmas, we wouldn’t advise digging out your Spring clothes just yet. We’re pretty positive that we’ve still got a couple of cold months ahead of us.

As 2017 goes on, we are hoping to own it and will be kicking the year off with the first of our 2017 video production collaborations with Newcastle University.

We’re looking forward to the surprises and challenges 2017 has in store for us and eagerly await the end of the year, so that we can again look back and reflect on all that we’ve accomplished and learned over the months that follow.

In the spirit of Christmas we sent Ziggy, our office dog out to deliver cards and presents to all of our friends on Hoults Yard.

Obviously we didn’t send her out by herself, and I was the one to go with her. Honestly? I don’t know who needs a sleep more right now!

Armed with a handful of seasonal cards and Cadbury’s selection boxes we hit the road. We headed outside on to our first stop.

In just that short walk to our neighbours’ we were stopped by three cooing women dressed in Santa dresses all desperate for a cuddle with our Zig.

Being beautiful must be a chore though, as she got bored quickly and started to pull to the next destination. I was then dragged up the stairs and into the first office.

Everybody there was delighted to meet Ziggy and they were all desperate for hugs. She relished in it for a small while, but again, she soon got tired and decided to march back out of the office in a mission to find our next destination! Shouting goodbye, I had no choice but to follow her lead.

But oh no! Out in the hallway were two men on their lunch break…

The smell of chilli was strong and Ziggy soon caught a waft of it. Next thing I knew we were standing side-by-side (or in Ziggy’s case on the lap of) the poor man eating his dinner. Thankfully, and I believe only because Ziggy’s so adorable, he laughed and went on to greet her just as enthusiastically as she had greeted him.

Next we headed downstairs, where our other neighbours were in the midst of a Christmas party and were looking a little red faced and jolly. The team members nearest to us were all large males and immediately softened at the sight of our strawberry-blonde delivery girl.

We then headed to the main reception on Hoults Yard, to say hello and Merry Christmas to our friends down there.

Ziggy, overcome with excitement, mad me run most of the journey. As soon as the girls saw Ziggy it was cuddles and fuss all round.

A pattern began to emerge as we continued to do our rounds. We’d be stopped by everyone we came to and they all commented on how gorgeous she was, she’d then pull me away and I imagine we looked like something from a comedy sketch or cartoon…

We’d then go to each office and conduct our delivery duties. Everybody would ask whether they could keep Ziggy for Christmas (of course I said no, I have a job to hold on to after all…) And then after a few strokes and a nosey investigation around each individual office we’d run on to the next.

Of course, in her excitement Ziggy didn’t care if she dragged me through murky deep puddles, or that I was wearing white trainers. She didn’t even mind that she splattered mud up my legs. She even kindly left a small reminder (a trail of wet paw prints) that she’d visited in every office that we went into following ‘puddle-gate’.

Nope, she didn’t mind one bit.

And now, back in the warm (dry) comfort of the office, the Christmas excitement was just a little too much for our tired little pooch.

So for now, maybe Mango Pup Delivery as a business idea should be put to one side. Maybe we’ll try again next year.

We’ve collaborated with the NHS to produce a number of different projects; each as interesting as the last.

Our knowledge of the NHS has expanded greatly. In the midst of our video productions we’ve learned more about how the NHS’s services aren’t solely provided in a hospital environment, or just simply on a national scale. Their services are delivered in all aspects of the community: from ‘mindfulness’ courses, to the local transformation of the care provided to those in need.

The studio has had the pleasure of working with students and lecturers from Northumbria University and Newcastle University, to create promotional films; along the way learning more about their courses and the people that make both universities a unique and fantastic place to study.

Our diverse range of services lead us to a partnership with Bellway Homes, creating film productions and our specialty time lapse videos.

This doesn’t mean to say that we haven’t faced our fair share of challenges. Most notably, whilst working with Sirius and Newcastle Council to produce a time lapse during the extraction of coal tar from the River Tyne.

Due to the narrow pathways and the lack of electricity we had to work hard to overcome some of the technical difficulties caused by the location… But we got there in the end! And we have some great time lapse imagery to show for it.

We’ve worked on such a variation of projects this year, and have had the pleasure of meeting some fantastic and awe-inspiring people.

At a time in the year where the idea of ‘reflection’ is prevalent, its safe to say that at Mango, we are always grateful that each day, week or month can be so different from the last.

We are lucky that our industry allows for such variation and an opportunity to meet so many different and fascinating people.

With exciting projects in the pipeline, we hope to continue on with out fortunate streak and make 2017 our year!

There’s no denying that the winter has, unfortunately, finally arrived.

We’ve been fortunate enough, however, that the weather has been relatively mild up until recently, but lo, the bitter-cold months have begun.

Outside, our breath is now visible, the roads are now icy and our fingers are going numb. It’s harder to drag ourselves out of bed and we all sit rosy-cheeked in the office on the morning as we come in from the freezing outdoors and into the toasty warm studio.

But its not just the people at Mango Studio that the change in the weather is effecting.

Even poor Ziggy and George, our office dogs, are feeling the cold.

Usually playful and the source of entertainment around the office, the two are feeling sleepy, groggy and just not themselves…

For making corporate films, it means you must get in contact with a lot of companies who will require your services. If you can create a large shortlist of companies and contacts within these companies then it will make a job much easier and create a large group of connections you can access.

It would also be important for you to create a catalogue of your work. Even if you’re up and coming, it would be good to create sample videos and sample shots of work that you are capable of. Another thought would be to do a couple of shoots for free.

Once you become a memorable name for the work that you do for the companies then you can start working in the video production industry doing corporate films and or other means of film productions

Take for example Music Videos, the Music video post production stage may be one of difficult of all short production projects (corporate films, short films etc) because it requires a lot of work post production.

When making a music video, you need to take upon the responsibility for making the band/artist involved happy as well as, if a director was present, them happy. This gives a large weight on your shoulders to create a product that is a combination of probably 2 different visions. You’re also have the decision for where a cut is made and what is added. With a lot of shots covering during a music video (for example, multiply performance shots from different angles, possibly narrative shots, covering shots of the location, close ups on each member of a band) you may find yourself have to use only 5% of the footage that was shot, at a push.

As well as cutting down footage and trying to make sure everyone is happy with the cuts that you made, syncing is another issue. When making a music video, it is important that it all syncs to the song that is being used. So yet again, you’ve got like 10 different shots aligned to a certain beat in a song and you have to decypher which would work best. If anything is off time during the shot, that’s that shot unusable for anything.

But another issue you may find when approaching a music video would be that it is time consuming and does get pretty tedious after a while. You will find yourself cut mere milliseconds off of a shot to try make it match up to what YOU want to see on the edit. With many repeated edits of a single shot on a single beat for a song that would last 3 or so minutes…you’re going to hate the song that you’re editing by the end of it.

Now, take into account what is need for a full scale production…1 and a half hours of footage to be edited, bloopers, backing tracks.

Sometimes working in the film and video production industry has large gaps where you are not working. This gives you a lot of time to network and communicate with current or potential clients. And this is where social media becomes an importance.

Social Media is just about getting our message across to an audience who choose to listen to us. It’s a chance for clients and companies to communicate on a basis. Whether this would be making blogs and having comments on them, sending emails out and just general phone calls to clients.
This may be seen as a nuisance and a selling point, but it’s good to create good relationships even if you don’t want our products, we’re always here if you need us.

But staff are not permanent in the creative media industry . Many employees are Freelance workers so they are only connected with the production company for a single job, and if they are liked then they will be asked back to do any other jobs for them. Even if it’s not on the production side of the  company then it can also affect the company. For example the social media community manager can change the interaction between the company and any clients. And that is the case at the moment, Mango Studios has a new Community Manager so there will be a new format and a new way the social media of Mango Studio will be presented to you, there may be some bugs and patches needed to get kickstarted but as I’m sure iOS 7 will be, everything will become more polished as time goes on and everyone won’t be missing the old system.
