What is sure to be the number one question on the minds of Canon enthusiasts, yes, the 5D Mark IV will shoot 4K video — DCI 4K in fact, with resolutions up to 4096 x 2160 at 30p

Here at Mango Studio we are big fans of the SLR cameras for shooting films we find video production has developed in to an art form through the use of these cameras. We use the 5D mark iii, a hybrid of the mark ii and the earlier 7D, its respondent in lower light and its ability to shoot slow mo, (50fps,) are two key features for us.

The huge sensors and high quality lenses of the Cannon 5D generally give a shallower depth of field then most traditional video cameras. Which means our directors are able to create a much more cinematic feel to our film productions.

We really cant wait to get our hands on the new 5d!

Time lapse footage is created with a High Speed camera shooting a single shot or a slow tracking shot. This creates the illusion of a fast passage of time. Time lapse shots are usually used in the corporate film industry to show the development of a facility or to show the passage of time within a working environment. You may see time lapse shots in movies or TV series’ to establish a location of the script.

Slow motion shots are used to emphasise a certain action. These are usually used professionally in the science community to show reactions of certain experiments. In the more exciting and entertaining side, slow motion footage can be used in films to show your protagonist doing some awesome things or to create tension of an event about to unfold (such as the style of Sopranos or The Godfather).

These shot would both be performed using high speed cameras. These are usually digital cameras that can have the frame-rate altered to create such shots. On some film sets, these cameras are loaded with film to use but that would be the more expensive route, since film costs a lot of money and if a shot is missed then that’s 10K thrown out the door. Many cameras delivery time lapse and slow motion settings in this generation but the larger slow motion and time lapse market of camera are the Phantom and GoPro. Phantom creating a high quality high speed cameras which can slow footage down up to 1 million frame per second whereas a GoPro is a light, accessibly and malleable camera that can be attached to near enough anything and create this shots (with a reduction in quality from the phantom of course).

Well firstly, let’s talk about the main aspect of Google Glass the article was based around. Since Google Glass is a product of google (I know it sounds stupid, but that point escaped my thoughts before I read this article), it can access many of the apps that Google such as Google Docs, where you can access Files and sort files via voice command.

Another one of Google Applications that can be accessed through Google Glass would be Google Maps. This allows your little map can be seen through your lens and is basically like having a Human GPS system. These maps can be displayed in a Taller POV and or a Birds-eyes view which can be changed between via Voice command.

Now, we got to see through the eyes of a Google Glass user. Some of the photos in the gallery weren’t the best but you did get to understand what Google Glass is doing. Now you start off with a Home Screen showing the time, date and weather conditions in the local area. Any option and application can be accessed by using the command “ok glass”.
From this command it opens up the ability to view photos, videos, documents and call people.

One issue that this gallery addressed was the refraction of light on a bright day. A bright day may make the Google Glass lens hard to read/see but the geniuses in production made it so the lens would project an image along a coloured spectrum if obscured by light refraction.

All these ideas are great for production and shows the innovation and advantages of working with a large company when making a product. These skills would be needed in the Video Production industry as there will be many problems on a production which will need quick thinking or forward thinking.

For example, if you want to have a mirror shot in your film and you ,obviously, don’t want the camera to be seen, how are you going to get around that? I’ve seen this done many times, each time with a different method (cut away, fade out, CGI Mirror etc).

Before the new Macbook Pro, that looks like R2D2, was released it needed to have a concept. So where did the concept of the famous robot from the Star Wars Franchise and where how this shape would effect the product and how customers use the product. Somehow it came out the best product design out there and I’m sure it may have been their best design idea. Since Apple is very secretive with their development process then there are not any early concept ideas for the Mac Pro (2013) available for the public eye, but to jump from the old design to this new one would be a large leap.

Now this is all important with the pre-production industry. When making a film, you must create a draft brief of the project so you know what you want to see when you finally make the product. Once a draft is written up, it can be edited if needs be and then it can be accepted as a solid production from when on a producer will have to organise the shoot.

It’s been a pretty quiet week for tech news and that’s because there is a lot of concept development going on which is necessary for the products that we demand. I for one am looking forward to the new Mac Pro as it is a creative design. And looking forward to any movies that are in the pre production stage at the moment

This can be found present in the new iPhone 5 series. As well as releasing the new iPhone 5S, Apple released the new iPhone 5C. What does the “c” stand for, I’m not sure…but from what I gathered it could be “Colour”, “Capable” or “Cheap”. They say that the iPhone 5C was simplified, and indeed it was, but my making the parts out of a polycarbonite plastic instead of metal which reduced the quality, durability and in my opinion, the look of the iPhone.

This example can be held true to video production and filming. If you take one component away from a production and replace it with something cheaper and less valuable then it’s likely that the product your produce will be not up to the standard expected.
If as a video production company we decided to choose a cheaper source for music or sound recording equipment it would drastically effect how the corporate film or event/conference filming we were doing turned out and ultimately would make a bad product for us to make.

**Note; I’m not saying that the iPhone 5C is a bad product, it’s a great idea to create a cheaper counterpart to their iPhone 5S so their products are more accessible. I’m just saying that the equivalent of doing so in a Film Production environment would lead to drastically reduced quality.

These advancements in technology have also led to advancements in Micro and Mobile technology with the introduction of Go Pros and Slow Mo features on the iPhone 5S you see that standards are being brought up to professional levels. Nowadays people are questioning the use of paying £300 for a Canon EOS 1100D HD DSLR camera when you could buy an iPhone 5 and shoot similar quality and probably get more fame by posting it straight to Youtube with no post production.

But then again sometimes a bit of professional touch is something that cannot be duplicated by modern day micro and mobile technology. For example, Gavin Free of the Youtube Slow Mo Guys did not feel threatened by the new iPhone 5S slo mo feature which shoots at 120 fps (frames per second). He had owned a Phantom Slow Mo Camera from the age of 18 and has worked on film set such as Sherlock Holmes 2, Dredd and Hot Fuzz. Even with this speed of technological advancement, a 120 fps slow motion camera does not face up again a 24,000 fps Phantom.

Professional quality is something that will cost a lot and will take a lot of time but the product with be something along the lines of perfection like Atlas, who has been in development for 11 years and is near enough frighteningly Terminator like (more of a T800….hopefully we don’t reach T1000 levels).

Another added benefit with the slr canon range is that the size allows for light weight rigs and flexible light foot shooting, which is helpful when trying to get broad coverage at music festivals and conferences. (https://vimeo.com/39439544 ) I’ve often found I can traipse around events with a bag full of lenses and cards, with a hend-held rig, getting loads of juicy cut aways. Personally I prefer the zacuto hand-held, with longer reaching arms, that allow an adjustment of angles, which means I find myself hunching over less, like some of the other rigs, resulting in back gramps. When carrying out interviews, unless you’re going to slap on barn doors, a matte box and have a bunch of lights, the SLR’s are less intimidating and noticeable to contributors, which can be a benefit in the corporate world, when working with businesses that have very little or no media training, softening the barrier. But if you are going to accessorise your rig, when shooting outside I would suggest a polarizing filter, which enriches colours as well is cleans up reflections, bit.ly/fDwl69 and a grad ND filter, bit.ly/LjrvQ which nicely neutralizes the sky, bringing a subtle yet pleasing aesthetic to your image, can be attempted in post but evident. Another piece of kit that has come in handy are the spider arms, flexible and durable for the light weight 5D’s. We attached one to a jib in a matter of minutes to set up a beauty over-the-head shot. There is an increasing need to upgrade your equipment in order to stay on top of the latest thing, and for anybody working in ‘the game’, they need to know when to draw the line. We have also started experimenting, building our own mini-rigs, hack-sawing pieces of galvanized steel and bmx handle bars, but they have yet to be put to the full test.
